Topic: Physical split

This seems to work OK in MapInfo but when going on to do another split the process and reason set by the previous split are retained in the tool and the process and reason screen does not appear.

Re: Physical split

Hi Graham

This is exactly as designed. The only reason the 'Reason and Process popup window' appears is because you have not already entered a Reason and/or Process in the main window. However, once you have entered values for both of these (either in the 'Main window' or via the 'Reason and Process popup window') then the popup window won't need to appear again.

The only reason the popup window was created in the first place was because it is not possible to stop the user splitting a polygon in GIS and then clicking 'Get Map Selection' before they have entered a Reason and Process. Because the tool then recognises a physical split is in progress and wishes to complete the job, it has 2 options:
  1. Show the 'Reason and Process popup window' prompting the user to enter the missing value(s).
  2. Show a warning message that the values are missing and do not complete the physical split.

Option 1 was chosen by the developers. Option 2 could be implemented instead but there is more risk that the physical split is not completed.

Re: Physical split

Hi Andy

I'm confused! The problem is that the previous selected process and reason options for split 1 are automatically carried over to completely different polygons for split 2 where or not if they apply.

Re: Physical split

I'm not understanding what the problem is.

Once set, the 'Reason' and 'Process' values will be retained and will be used for ALL subsequent updates (attribute changes, splits and merges). If you wish to use a different 'Reason' or 'Process' for one update than was used for the previous update then you need to change the values in the 'Reason' and 'Process' boxes in the main window.  This has always been the way the tool works - otherwise users would be prompted every time they performed any of the update functions which would be very annoying.

I think you might be being confused by the popup window that appears if you perform a split without first entering a 'Reason' and/or 'Process'. This popup is not intended to appear EVERY time you perform a split - it will appear only once if you have not previously entered both values. Once you have entered values for both fields (either directly in the main window or in the pop window) the values will be remembered and hence the popup never needs to appear again.
