Topic: MapMate search based on polygon

Hi All,

Does anyone know how to do a record search based on a polygon in MapMate please?

Thanks for your help. All the best, Penny

Re: MapMate search based on polygon

Hi Penny,

It is *possible* to query polygons via the MapMate maps, but the first thing I would say is that it is considerably easier to export data from MapMate into a GIS and do the polygon querying there, if you have that option! The polygon options in MapMate are not well-documented, but here's some pointers.

To draw a polygon in MapMate itself, you have to have a suitable map open - "suitable" will depend on what data it is you want to query, e.g. one of the Special maps if you want to query all species from a taxon group in one go. If necessary set the map to "Show feature detail" to make it editable. Then go to the Edit and choose Tools - Draw Poly. When the polygon is nearly complete you can right-click to Close Polygon.

Once you have a polygon it will be listed in the Feature List (from the drop-down box above the map) and will be called "User Poly" (you may want to rename it for clarity). If you click on the User Poly in the Feature List to highlight, you will then able to hover over the map, right-click and choose "Query Selected Regions". This gives you a range of querying options based on the polygon you have selected.

An alternative to drawing a polygon in MapMate itself is to import a polygon file, most easily done in .mif format. MapMate have provided some online tools to help do this, see this page to digitize a boundary from Google maps/aerials:
http://www.mapmate.co.uk/userzone/p/Digitizer

and this page for info on how to export the file and import it into MapMate:
http://www.mapmate.co.uk/userzone/p/Usi … 20Exporter

Once your .mif file is imported into MapMate I think (but haven't checked) that you would then be able to query it via the "Query Selected Regions" procedure given above.

Thank you Martin, we did indeed do as you suggest - export the data first then do the rest in GIS!

Thanks again for your reply. All best wishes, Penny
